The children have taken over at Rockcliffe First School! For one day, on Thursday 5th May, pupils were invited to apply, interview for and 'take over' the job roles of the adults in school. Takeover Day gives children a chance to gain an insight into the world of work and lend a fresh perspective to the day-to-day running and decision-making processes of their school. It promotes Article 12 of the UNCRC (United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child), which says all children should have a say in matters that affect them.

The 35 Year 4 pupils have taken on the roles of the senior leadership team, teaching assistants, the caretaking team, midday supervisors, Out of School Club staff, admin assistants and charity fundraisers.
Mrs Colpitts-Elliott said, “Since our first Children’s Takeover Day in November 2014, the project has gone from strength to strength at Rockcliffe and this has definitely been the most successful event to date. I have been inspired by the mature and effective way in which our pupils have taken on a variety of responsibilities today - I’ve felt that our school has been in very safe hands!”

Through North Tyneside Learning Trust’s ‘World of Work’ project, the school have been supported by First Class Supply, who recruit and supply staff to local schools. First Class admin officers, Jemma and Melissa helped children to write their letters of application and Consultant Fran assisted with the interview process. The team of ‘takeover’ admin assistants also spent the morning at First Class’s offices on Whitley Road to hone their admin skills!
